In December I was lucky enough to take a wee trip to Hawaii with the fam! Being the first time we visited, we hit Waikiki to swim, surf, eat, drink & party a week away! Being their winter when we visited, it was crazy how beautifully warm it was! Loved picking up a $2 lilo from one of the many ABC stores & float around in the 27 degree water for the day. We were weirdly obsessed with the ABC stores – they are like USA’s answer to our dairies. But on steroids. You can buy literally everything there. Needless to say, a lot of money was spent of $1 burritos and $1.75 hot dogs. It actually makes me laugh at how disgusting they were, but somehow so good.

The American culture here is very present; big cars, big mouths (sorry but it’s true) and BIG meals! I’ve always known that their answer to a “regular size” drink at Burger King is rather large, but wasn’t prepared to be given an actual BUCKET of Dr. Pepper. Yes I finished it.

A couple of my recommendations for food if you find yourself in Waikiki:

The Cheesecake Factory – every flavour cheesecake you could ever imagine!

Goofy Cafe – Best brekkie hands down! Get the eggs benedict!

Dukes – BABY BACK RIBS. I DIE. Best I’ve ever had. *cries that they are so far away*

North Shore Shrimp truck – L e g e n d a r y fresh water garlic shrimps. We were obsessed with these. Luckily they have also opened up a street stall for these garlic shrimps along the Waikiki strip, so we were able to chow down on these multiple times!

I was really gutted not to get to swim with turtles during my time on the North Shore this trip. Apparently the island was experiencing a rather large off season swell, which was incredible to see out at Pipeline & Sunset beach! But as a result, the water was pretty churned up and all the surfers scare the turtles away. Instead we just got to see a couple getting rolled by some big waves when they were coming up for air. #lol #poordudes

One of my faaavourite parts of cruising around the island was being able to grab ice cold baby coconuts from road side stalls everywhere. Nuummiiieeessss.

I highly recommend hiring a car to drive around the island. You can do it in a day while stopping off whenever and where ever you want. Keep an eye out for Jurassic Park filming locations. #nerdedout. Also definitely make sure you get the Diamond Head hike in! Incredible views of Waikiki and a mean work out!

Waikiki is through and through built for tourists. The beach and streets are a constant flood of people, homeless crazies yelling in the streets and huge department stores. So although I did enjoy a bit of shopping, it was honestly a bit overwhelming and not really my ideal vibe. I felt much more comfortable on the North Shore – so much more chilled! So I can only imagine what the other islands will be like!

Overall, we had such a rad time eating and surfing the days away! Can’t wait to get back to Oahu soon – I need to conquer the Stairway To Heaven! Maui is also high on the list. Mahalo dudes!
